Matthias church

Matthias or Mary church was established by Bela IV and the first building having the same size as the present one was erected here between 1255 and 1269 in early gothic style. It was rebuilt during the reign of Louis I and Sigismund. The southern gate named after Virgin Mary was carved in 1370. The southern tower was built during the rule of Matthias, it was decorated with his crest. The church was converted into a mosque after 1541 and was restored later in baroque style. It was extensively rebuilt between 1874 and 1896 by Franz Schulek. Present renovation started in 2005.
