Statue of King Stephen I.

Saint Stephen I was the first elected King of Hungary, as the founder of Hungarian Kingdom he ruled between 1001 and 1038. Hungarian control expanded over the Carpathian Basin during his lifetime, Christianity spread in the region. He was born as Vajk but he chose Stephen as a baptized name, since it means both "crown" in Latin, and "norm, standard" in Hebrew. In fact his mission was to grant a norm to Hungary through the Holy Crown. He was canonized in 1083 with his son, Emeric and a bishop named Gerard.
